How to Successfully Mix and Match Office Furniture

Wouldn’t it be great if you could just revamp your entire office space every year? Out with the old furniture and in with the new? Ideally, you’d be able to pick out new furniture, update your space, and install new technology over the weekend. But, unfortunately, budgets and time often get in the way of this vision.

However, when you work with the interior design team at iSpace Office Interiors, you not only get years of knowledge, but you also get all the catalogs and swatches your heart could desire. We can even work with any budget you throw at us. So, while you might be tempted to throw out all the old and start fresh, there are some ways we can use existing pieces and incorporate them with your new office furniture.

Don’t Be Afraid to Mix and Match

We’re living in the modern 21st century, which means your office should be, too. Gone are the days of matchy-matchy, which should give you some relief. Before you start picking out new office suites or reception lounge chairs, let’s take a look at what you’ve got already. As long as the new pieces don’t clash with the old, we could still repurpose some of what you’ve currently got. Here are a few things to think about:

  • Try pairing leather chairs with chrome décor.
  • Choose plaids and stripes in the same color family or as complimentary colors.
  • Incorporate more black pieces for a modern, clean look (plus black goes with everything).

Pull Inspiration from a Main Piece

If you still can’t quite picture what your new space will look like with mixed and matched furniture, then here’s another way to look at it: pull inspiration from either a prominent piece in the room or a color scheme. This design thinking keeps things simple and allows you to pull focus back to one place in the room. For office spaces, this could be the desk. For lobby areas, this could be an accent wall or couch. For collaborative spaces, this could be the center table or cubicle areas. Coming back to the room’s focal point while picking out new office furniture is a great way to ensure that your mix and match adventure remains on brand and cohesive with the company.

Look for Ways to Repeat

Our other favorite design tip is to look for ways to repeat when mixing and matching office furniture. While you may not want the same office chair in every suite or the same piece of art on every wall, that doesn’t mean you can’t create some type of cohesion throughout the office. When it comes to repetition, it’s often easier to repeat with colors. So, if you have grey chairs with yellow stitching in the lobby, you’d be safe to invest in some yellow wall art or use fake floral bouquets on the lobby table. Additionally, if your company logo uses bright colors, look for ways to repeat and incorporate those colors in office furniture throughout the entire building.

Keep Workflows in Mind

Disrupting your staff’s workflows is the last thing you want to do when it comes to revamping your office furniture. That’s often why so many companies mix and match, upgrading room by room rather than all at once. Furthermore, if you shop without space planning first, you might run into a scenario where the furniture isn’t functional for your teams. This reduces productivity and can really affect the energy of your entire office. So, before you purchase or mix and match office furniture, make sure your endeavor won’t interrupt workflow and can still keep your teams engaged during the workday.
